UNC officially misses out on Juke Harris, but it could have been so much worse

Harris not picking the Heels isn't a surprise at all.

The news that Juke Harris won't be playing for North Carolina has been expected for a little while now. Harris, a stud for Wake Forest this past season, originally was considering UNC, Michigan and Tennessee, but Michael Malone was able to land other targets and it seemed like the Heels cooled their interest a bit.

Tyler Hansbrough's thoughts on Michael Malone are a needed reminder for North Carolina fans

Harris was then down to Michigan and Tennessee and for a lot of Carolina fans, the idea of losing the sharpshooter to the reigning national champs just didn't sit well with a lot of people. Luckily, that's not going to happen, as the NC product is SEC-bound to suit up for the Vols:

Juke Harris has finally made his decision and committed to Tennessee and Rick Barnes

Hey, we'll tip our cap to Barnes here, as he is clearly going all-in to make history with Tennessee in reaching the Final Four before he retires. With Barnes being 71 years old, he's not expected to be running the show in Knoxville for much longer.

That's why from our chair, if the Tar Heels were going to miss out on Harris to someone, we're glad it was Barnes. Don't get us wrong, we absolutely would have loved to see Harris suit up in the ACC and be a complete and total game-changer for Michael Malone and the Heels.

However, that wasn't in the cards. Could you imagine if he went to Michigan? This is nothing against Dusty May and the Wolverines, but it would have made the reigning national champs even stronger moving forward and the idea of Harris being a home-state Carolina kid and potentially winning it all in the Big Ten... again, it just felt off.

Michigan was close to landing him, but Barnes never stopped pushing for his signature. North Carolina has been working wonders in the portal too, bringing in Matt Able, Neoklis Avdalas, Terrence Brown and Cade Bennerman. Meanwhile, Maximo Adams and Sayon Keita are also on the way, with the two being 5-star studs. Malone isn't close to done targeting center help too.

With all of that said, people might be hitting the panic button on missing out on Harris if the cupboard was empty for North Carolina, but Malone has been on his grind. That's why losing out on the Wake Forest transfers stings, sure, but it's not back-breaking. Things are certainly made better with him headed to Tennessee too.
