The widely-expected outcome occurred on Thursday night at Carmichael Arena.
Courtney Banghart and the Tar Heels handled the extremely short-handed SMU Mustangs, securing a double-digit lead early and never looked back.
SMU has had a rough go with its roster's health. On Thursday, seven, yes, seven, Mustang players were forced to sit out, including former Tar Heel Paulina Paris, who suffered a season-ending injury (one that will end her college basketball career).
With a trip to Durham looming on Sunday, North Carolina was looking for a good tune-up before hitting the road for this big-time clash. They got just that, as the Tar Heels handled business throughout.
A little bit from everyone
UNC was able to go deep into its bench, receiving contributions from everyone who touched the floor. An impressive 12 players scored at least once in the win, including four double-digit scorers.
The standouts
Taliyah Henderson was outstanding off the bench, contributing 13 points while connecting on all six of her shot attempts from the floor. Lanie Grant continued her red-hot shooting stretch, leading the way with 15 points, while Indya Nivar contributed 14 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Controlling the Glass
North Carolina had a major advantage on the glass against the short-handed Mustangs. With eight different players recording multiple rebounds, the Tar Heels claimed a 50-20 advantage on the glass.
What's Next?
Riding an eight-game winning streak, North Carolina now braces for another epic clash with the rival Duke Blue Devils. Tip-off in Durham on Sunday afternoon is scheduled for 1:00 PM EST, and the game will be televised nationally on ABC.
This is one the Tar Heels have had circled on the calendar for quite some time. It would be a huge boost to come home from their trip down Tobacco Road with a win.
