Michael Malone and the Tar Heels strike AGAIN!

North Carolina went shopping on the international front and got their guy, securing a commitment from 7-footer Sayon Keita.

The 7-foot, 18-year-old Mali native is a projected 2027 lottery pick, oozing talent as a finisher, passer, offensive rebounder and shot-blocker, with a 7'5 wingspan.

When it comes to talent, not many players around the world bring to the table what Keita does. Only 18-years-old, Keita has already displayed an elite ability to finish at the rim, run the floor at an extremely high level, and oh yeah, uses his 7-foot frame to block shots in the post.
Jon Chepkevich, the scouting director at Draft Express, sung very high praise about the newest member of the UNC basketball program:
“Seven-footer with 7-5 wingspan from Bamako, Mali. Talented, mobile, fluid. Needs to add to his frame and polish his technique, but the upside is through the roof. Among the top 2008-born international prospects. Has been in Spain with Barcelona for a few years now. Made his ACB debut last season the day after his 17th birthday. Was impressive at last year’s NBPA Top 100 Camp. Has a lot to work with and is by all accounts a great kid with the right approach.”
North Carolina has been heavily involved in his recruitment for quite some time, as they even hosted him for an official visit to Chapel Hill. Even with the coaching change from Hubert Davis to Michael Malone, UNC's interest never went away. In fact, the new staff might have liked him as a prospect even more than the old regime did, as he definitely has the makeup to replace Henri Veesaar as the program's starting center for the 2026-2027 season.
For Malone to make a rumored business trip to Spain, you can sense just how much the Tar Heels were pushing to land Keita (and potentially other international stars as well).
Now, Tar Heel fans can breathe a bit of a sigh of relief, as the program has secured a very capable starting big man to fill a huge void left by Veesaar's departure. The roster is starting to take shape, and it's exciting to think about just how good this team could be if all the pieces gel together as they are expected to.
