Former Tar Heel John Henson knows what this time of year means for North Carolina. Of course, the objective is to compete for a national championship every year, but there's a lot of factors that have to play out rather perfectly for it all to happen.

One of the major factors is the injury bug, something UNC couldn't avoid at all this season.

Henson provides a former player perspective

On The Field of 68 podcast, Henson was asked about Wilson being sidelined for the remainder of the 2025-2026 season. He brought up an interesting point in regard to practice, given that is how Wilson suffered his latest injury as he rehabbed from the previous one.

3 ACC tournament injuries robbing fans of joy including Caleb Wilson for UNC

"I can't remember a time where we really practiced at this point of the season. It was called Run and Shoot. You get in the gym, you run through the plays, you run your sets and you put your shots up and you get outta there, specifically for things like this that could happen. Like, literally, Coach Williams, worst-case scenario, best player gets hurt.

And now all this money now and all this, sweat equity you have in the season is, it's up in the air because, I don't know what they were doing when they were practicing, but I was making a joke earlier I don't remember dunking after March, except in the Elite Eight when you go to the big arena and you dunk for the fans and they yell and scream."

"A generational player you just don't see at your school a lot"

Henson understands the magnitude of this injury, and knows that players like Caleb Wilson don't come around too often.

Making the case for Caleb Wilson to stun everyone and return to UNC next season

Injuries like Wilson's are very unfortunate for everyone involved:

"It's unfortunate. For Carolina, it's unfortunate for the fans. This is a generational player you just don't see at your school a lot. He's gonna be a top-five pick. Obviously, their ceiling lowers tremendously from a championship-type level to, I think, they can make a run, but
when you look at the Duke game, which essentially is the best team in the country and one of the highest-rated teams ever, he was the reason in the first half that they even were in it. He was hitting tough shots after tough shots. He was the guy who kept them afloat.

For them to lose a guy like that going into Cameron? It is devastating, and it's just unfortunate for the program. They'll be fine without 'em. I was listening to some of the stuff like their defense has actually been better, but that's because probably the margin of error and things that they had to do, they had to tighten up on that end, knowing that they don't have the luxury of a Wilson down there.

Just you hurt for the fan base, you hurt for the school, but it is what it is. That's college basketball. We got to see a good run from him. And it's on to the next level, man. He'll be a top-five guy. I think he'll be really good in the league."

Sure, this has been a tough situation for both Wilson and the Tar Heels, but as Henson mentioned, the show must go on. UNC must now focus on who they have available for postseason action, while Wilson is now likely focusing on his NBA Draft process.
