The UNC football program continues to add talent via the transfer portal, as their latest commitment won't have to travel far from his previous destination.

North Carolina has earned a commitment from Gavin Gibson, formerly a member of in-state rival East Carolina's football program. The 6-foot, 185-pound defensive back is coming off an official visit to Chapel Hill this past weekend.

After losing three starters to graduation, the UNC football program needed to add some depth and experience to its secondary. Gibson could definitely provide that, as his versatility should be a very valuable asset in his lone season with the Tar Heels in 2025.

Gibson put together a productive season, starting in 10 games this fall. Those starts were split between two positions: five at cornerback and five at strong safety. He finished the season three interceptions (returning one for a touchdown), three pass breakups, 27 tackles, and a forced fumble.

Now, the UNC football program has officially earned commitments from two former East Carolina players this offseason. CJ Mims was the first, pledging his commitment to the Tar Heels just about a month ago.

Gibson becomes the first defensive back to transfer to North Carolina this offseason, as there's still plenty of room to add to this group. Remember, both Ty Adams and Tyrane Stewart have made their way to the transfer portal, so don't be surprised if Bill Belichick and company have plans of adding more secondary depth over the next few weeks.
