When North Carolina plays its first home game of the 2026 season, they won't be looking to impress any future recruits.
Due to past recruiting violations, the program will not be hosting any recruits for their home opener against East Tennessee State. The news was first reported by Inside Carolina.

To make it clear, this is not connected to the ongoing program investigation that led to general manager Michael Lombardi's resignation.
In a statement to Inside Carolina, University spokesperson Kevin Best had this to say regarding the matter:
“Last season we self-reported a violation through our normal university compliance measures. As a result, we are unable to host unofficial visits this weekend versus ETSU. We are still permitted to host official visits this weekend but have decided as a program to concentrate our official visits on the remaining five home games. The situation has been properly resolved through the NCAA process, and we have worked with the NCAA and University compliance on appropriate and corrective action.”
Of course, some will say this is a slap on the wrist for the recruiting violations that were self-reported, but it is a lost weekend in terms of recruiting. Sure, East Tennessee State isn't the most notable game on the home schedule, but you'd have to think that the energy will be extremely high on Saturday when the 1-0 Tar Heels take the field at Kenan Stadium for the first time this season.
It's the type of vibe you'd love for potential recruits to take in.

However, there are other home games, and UNC will simply pivot to have recruits attend those games. This is something the university worked with the NCAA on, so it's safe to say that they even agree that the corrective action taken is good enough to make up for the past violations.
Off-the-field issues have been the headlines surrounding the UNC football program essentially since Bill Belichick took the job as the head coach. It seems like every week there's something new, whether Pablo Torre is following Belichick and his girlfriend's every move or WRAL is bored and tries to stir the pot.
The people in the building are focused on starting the season with a two-game winning streak. Sure, they'd love to have recruits on campus to take in the environment, but they will live with it given the ramifications could've been a lot worse.
As Belichick famously says, "we're onto ETSU."
