Schedule changes force the cancellation of a highly-anticipated series
The UNC football program announced on Friday that the series with the Gamecocks will no longer occur. This series, which was scheduled for 2028 and 2029, would've had South Carolina hosting the first meeting while North Carolina hosted the second, but had to be canceled due to scheduling issues.

Here's what the official press release had to say on the matter:
The upcoming North Carolina and South Carolina home-and-home football series slated for 2028 in Columbia and 2029 in Chapel Hill, has been canceled.
Last year, the SEC and ACC announced the move to a nine-game conference schedule, resulting in changes to future nonconference schedules.
Steve Newmark tempers expectations for Bill Belichick’s second season at UNC
Remember, both the SEC and ACC announced scheduling changes that would result in each program playing 9 conference foes each season. This alters the non-conference slate, limiting the number of games each program can schedule outside of their respective conference.
This factor played a significant role in this home-and-home series being canceled and seemed to be the driving force between the two parties agreeing to not play it out as originally scheduled.
While it was disappointing for fans to hear, non-conference schedule changes were expected moving forward. It comes with the territory of scheduling these type of events so far in advance, as any conference changes can easily put a halt on prior plans.
If you were waiting for this matchup, we're sorry to let you know that you can officially cross it off your future calendar.
