While this was the expected outcome, Tar Heel fans held their breath as they awaited official word. You never know what could happen when it comes to the transfer portal, but now fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Shipp has signed on the dotted line to return for a third season at North Carolina.
Last Season
Shipp emerged as the team's top wide receiver in 2025, finishing the year with 60 receptions for 671 yards and six touchdowns. Four of his six touchdowns came over the final five weeks of the season, showing how his impact carried on through a trying season in Chapel Hill.
The leader in each of the aforementioned categories, Shipp earned Honorable Mention All-ACC honors. Given how bad the Tar Heels' quarterback play was, putting up the numbers Shipp did was impressive to say the least, as the hope is that the UNC football program can get him even more involved in the offense in 2026.
What this means for UNC
While the Tar Heels have added some reinforcements to its wide receiver room via the transfer portal, the unit as a whole is much stronger now knowing that Shipp is set to return. The Tar Heels will have a new starting quarterback this season, but it shouldn't matter for Shipp, who will be the go-to guy once again for the UNC football program.
Shipp took a massive leap in production this past season and is capable of even more. With added experience of his own along with hopefully a better offensive scheme all-around (under the direction of new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino), the UNC football program now can begin game planning knowing that No. 1 is set to catch passes in Chapel Hill once again this season.
Needless to say, this is significant news for Bill Belichick and the UNC football program.
