While the early part of the spring transfer portal window saw a handful of Tar Heels elect to pursue other opportunities, it has also rewarded the UNC football program with some new talent to work with.

Missouri transfer linebacker Mikai Gbayor becomes the first transfer portal addition for North Carolina during this spring window. He'll arrive in Chapel Hill with two years of eligibility to work with.

Gbayor is a very interesting case, given he's transferred twice since December. Originally, the Irvington, New Jersey native departed Nebraska to join the Missouri Tigers. His stint at Missouri didn't last very long, as he elected to re-enter his name into the transfer portal, finding a new home at North Carolina.

In two seasons at Nebraska, Gbayor recorded 73 total tackles. As a freshman, he recorded 24 of those tackles and followed it up by doubling his production as a sophomore, finsihing the year with 49 tackles (20 of which were solo).

Since Bill Belichick's arrival in Chapel Hill, the UNC football program has put an emphasis on adding talent on the defensive side of the football. North Carolina's linebacker core will have a much different look this upcoming season, but is a unit that should be much improved given the amount of depth they have accumulated at the position.

Now, it will be interesting to see how the UNC football program monitors the transfer portal. With some players leaving Chapel Hill, a few voids will be created, thus putting an emphasis for the coaching staff to explore all potential options to help improve the roster before the start of the upcoming season.
