The final game of the regular season essentially summed up what this entire season has been for the UNC basketball program.
At times, this team looks like it can compete with the very best, while other times, look like a team on the verge of missing out on the NCAA Tournament.
Unfortunately, the latter is the team that showed up down the stretch on Saturday night.
In an eventful game to say the least, the UNC basketball program couldn't hold onto its seven-point second-half lead, losing for the second time this season to rival Duke.
Early on, it looked like the Blue Devils were on the verge of another blowout win over the Tar Heels. Duke generated a 15-point lead, as everyone watching thought that they would pull away for good even before the first half came to a close.
However, Cooper Flagg drew his third personal foul with 3:18 remaining in the half, and all the momentum shifted in the Tar Heels favor.
North Carolina responded by going on a 10-0 run, closing out the half with a 14-4 edge over the final minutes, cutting the Blue Devils' lead to just one going into the break.
Following a strong first half in his final home game as a Tar Heel, RJ Davis continued his hot stretch early in the second half, helping guide the UNC basketball program to a seven-point lead with 15:44 left to play.
Unfortunately, the Tar Heels went ice cold from the floor, allowing Flagg (who didn't pick up another foul for the remainder of the game) and Duke to make a massive 33-14 run to secure what eventually turned out to be a 13-point victory.
Davis ultimately was one of two Tar Heels in double-figures, leading all scorers with 20 points. After pouring in 15 over the first 20 minutes, the fifth-year graduate student only had five points in the second half, as Duke did a much better job of containing the Tar Heels' top scoring threat.
Kon Knueppel led the Blue Devils with 17 points, as four of their five starters also scored in double-figures en route to claiming sole possession of the ACC regular season title.
A frustrating regular season comes to a frustrating end, as the UNC basketball program likely has to win the entire ACC Tournament in order to secure a berth in the NCAA Tournament. We saw flashes of what this team is capable of doing, but it just can't find a way to keep it consistent throughout a full 40 minutes of action (especially against high-quality teams).
