There's not much recent history between the UNC basketball program and Butler, but that is all set to change starting during the 2026-2027 season.
Jon Rothstein reported that the Tar Heels and Bulldogs will start a home-and-home series next season. The first meeting will take place in Chapel Hill while the return game will be at Hinkle Fieldhouse during the 2027-2028 season.

Return game at Hinkle Fieldhouse in 2027-28.
Since 2012, the two programs have met three times, all of which have come in neutral site events. Butler won the first of the two meetings, securing a 82-71 victory in the 2012 Maui Invitational while following it up with a 77-64 win in the 2014-2015 Battle 4 Atlantis event.
The Tar Heels snapped the streak during the 2016-2017 season when the two teams met in the NCAA Tournament. With a trip to the Elite Eight on the line, Joel Berry II and Justin Jackson combined for 50 points en route to a 92-80 victory over the No. 4-seeded Bulldogs.
Now, the two programs will once again reconnect on the basketball court, as they are now scheduled to meet for the first time in nearly a decade. The only difference now will be that the meetings will be held as true home games for both teams, providing fans of both teams the opportunity to watch their team host the other in non-conference action.
With the 2025-2026 season not yet started, more details regarding the 2026-2027 schedule will continue to trickle in over the next few months.
