Playing in one of the toughest high school leagues in the country, UNC basketball commit Derek Dixon has proven that he's the best among the field of talented student-athletes.

On Friday, Dixon was named the WCAC Player of the Year. He was instrumental in Gonzaga College High School's impressive 24-4 record up through 2024-2025 regular season.

Dixon, a four-star recruit, hasn't been getting as much attention as others in the Class of 2025 (such as his future teammate Caleb Wilson), but Dixon is making sure that the world knows just how good he is.

The first Class of 2025 player to commit to the UNC basketball program, Dixon is a very important addition for the future of the Tar Heels. With uncertainty surrounding next year's roster, Dixon, along with fellow Class of 2025 guard Isaiah Denis, have the potential to be immediate impact players in Hubert Davis' backcourt from the moment they arrive on campus.

"Dixon is a skilled combo-guard with an excellent feel for the game. He thinks and understands the game at a high-level and is both efficient and versatile with the ball in his hands. He’s a very good three-point shooter, with a compact release, and yet good loft and rotation despite his lack of a dip (39% in EYBL play). His best weapon though may be his mid-range pull-up. He's also nearly automatic when he’s able to get to the free-throw line." Adam Finkelstein- Director of Scouting, 247 Sports

While Dixon has some work left to do before his high school career comes to a close, this award is just another reminder that the UNC basketball program is adding an outstanding combo guard to its roster for next season and potentially beyond.

The UNC basketball program got themselves a good one, as fans should be excited for Dixon, along with the entire 2025 recruiting class, to arrive in Chapel Hill this summer.
