Thus far this summer, almost every single player Michael Malone and North Carolina have signed has now fully moved in and unpacked their bags in Chapel Hill. However, 5-star center Sayon Keita still hasn't made the move over from overseas, which, no question, has had UNC fans pretty worried. With the way the NCAA operates, there has been fear that maybe Keita would run into a roadblock clearance-wise.
That's not going to happen. According to the team over at TarHeel247, the expectation is that Keita will be arriving on campus at some point in August. While there's no set date locked in, the staff has no worries about Keita joining the team this summer ahead of classes starting up. Obviously, this is incredible news for the Tar Heels and Malone, as this just appears to be a visa issue, but the wheels are in motion.
"He'll be in Chapel Hill in August at some point," Andrew Jones said on the Heel Report podcast. "They're getting it taken care of. There's no concern. He (fellow UNC insider David Sisk) spoke with three different very notable program sources about this a couple of different times, and they're (staff) not concerned at all. They'd love for him to get there now, because he could start working out and building the chemistry, but they're not concerned at all. It's just a matter of time, and a matter of getting things dealt with."

5-star UNC commit Sayon Keita is expected to join the team in August
Shout out to Jones, Sisk, and Jacob Turner for calming us down a bit. From the moment North Carolina landed the pledge from Keita, fans have been pretty dang fired up. Multiple other schools were involved with the FC Barcelona youngster, but Malone and Chuck Martin flew over to Spain to get things done.
Keita is a bit of a raw prospect, and it's going to take him some time to fully develop his game, but luckily for UNC, Sean May is still on staff, and he knows a thing or two about dominating play in the low post while donning a Carolina jersey. May helped UNC win a national title while playing for Roy Williams, and now he has dreams of doing the same while on Malone's staff.
As for Keita, he was instantly given his 5-star status after committing to the Tar Heels, but these visa concerns have indeed had plenty of UNC supporters pretty worried about him not making his way over to suit up for Malone. Thankfully, that worst-case scenario has been taken off the table, as people can trust the intel the Heel Report team always provides.
The hope was that Keita could have joined his new teammates at UNC for offseason workouts, but he'll look to hit the ground running once he does fly over. Keita won't be expected to be a superstar for Malone in 2026-27, but he'll be able to make an immediate impact working alongside Alexandros Samodurov and other UNC bigs this season. The wait will end up being worth it for everyone.
