Fans of the UNC football program weren't happy when breakout star Tyler Thompson entered his name into the transfer portal.
It's safe to say they won't be thrilled with his choice of destination, one that will keep him within the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Tyler Thompson commits to Louisville
Thompson has committed to Jeff Brohm and the Louisville Cardinals. After exploring all his possible options, he has decided to stay within the same conference where he emerged as an elite pass-rusher.

More on Thompson
The now former Tar Heel ranked highly among transfer portal rankings, serving as one of the top pass rushers available on the market. It makes a ton of sense, given the season he put together in 2025 as a Tar Heel.
Thompson ranked fourth in the ACC in sacks and served as the highest-graded Tar Heel according to Pro Football Focus. North Carolina hoped that he would stay in town, building upon the success that he, along with Melkart Abou-Jaoude, built during the 2025 season.
However, Thompson is looking for a new opportunity elsewhere, hoping to add a much-needed pass rusher to the Cardinals defensive unit.
Thompson will make a visit to Chapel Hill
Don't worry- we'll all be able to watch Tyler Thompson play in Chapel Hill this season!
Unfortunately, this time won't be as a member of the home team.
For the first time since 2017, North Carolina and Louisville will compete against one another on the gridiron. The Cardinals are scheduled to visit Chapel Hill this fall, as Thompson will get a crack at his former team.
