The thought of Seth Trimble playing for Louisville after UNC makes me sick

UPDATE: Shortly after this article was published, it was announced that Seth Trimble has officially committed to Louisville.

You see the rumors pop up and you don't want to believe them. This is what's going on with former North Carolina standout Seth Trimble, who spent four memorable seasons with the Tar Heels, and instead of taking the easy route to hit the portal for greener pastures, he stayed loyal to Chapel Hill. Now, there's talks of him suiting up for Louisville next season in what would be a stunner.

Joe Tipton was the one to break the news that caught so many of us off guard, with Keeping It Heel's Nick Delahanty confirming the mutual interest there too. I might be overreacting, but this stinks, and it stinks bad.

No, there's no space left on the roster for Trimble to return next season, especially with Terrence Brown set to take over being the floor general for Michael Malone. However, since he entered the portal in case of being 'grandfathered in' to the five and five rule, Trimble can play elsewhere if he decides to do so. But, playing for Pat Kelsey at Louisville, where he can compete for a natty next year? It just doesn't sit right.

Seth Trimble's college story ending away from UNC is going to feel plain awkward

Back in 2024, Trimble briefly entered the portal, but pulled his name out after not mincing words in saying that his heart and soul belonged in Carolina. When he entered the portal once again this offseason, he made it quite clear that it was only to keep the door open for a potential reunion with the Tar Heels.

That didn't come to fruition, with Trimble entering the NBA Draft, going undrafted, and then signing a Summer League deal with the Wizards. Now, though, with all the madness from 2022 signees getting that coveted extra year of eligibility, multiple programs are showing strong interest in Trimble, with Louisville indeed on the list.

So, come next season, there might be a chance that Trimble returns to the Dean Done, but in a Louisville jersey. Imagine if he scores 20 points in a Cardinals win over the Tar Heels. That'd be deflating to watch, and not how part of his story should end. If anything, everyone should have Trimble's game-winning 3-pointer against Duke as a fresh memory, not thinking about him returning to campus as part of the opposition next season.

Onion. Serious onions.

As someone who grew up watching Vince Carter, Antawn Jamison, and Joseph Forte as my favorite Heels, imagining them in a different jersey would be enough to keep me up at night. This is low key how I'm feeling about Trimble.

On one hand, no one can blame him if he's working to come back to college, and if he wants to put himself in the best position to push for a national title. Kelsey worked overtime in bringing in stud talent this offseason, of course including the addition of 5-star transfer Flory Bidunga. Adding Trimble to the mix could give Kelsey the natty-contending piece he's been missing.

And you've got to figure Trimble would be able to land a pretty sweet NIL deal too, which would make an extra year of ACC ball even more worth it for him. Sure, that'd all be great. But still, no one can argue that Trimble in a different jersey, let alone one of a conference foe, is going to just feel weak overall. No one is going to wish ill will towards him if he does make this move, but it's another part of the college landscape that's still taking a lot to get used to. UNC supporters are always going to wish Trimble the best, and that won't change - it's just having to do so while he's at Louisville, if he signs to play for Kelsey, is never going to be easy.
