Tar Heel fans have watched as some of the top transfer portal point guards have come off the board. Still looking for a starting point guard, did the right guy for the UNC basketball program just enter the portal?

Surprising news surfaced on Monday morning as Baylor star freshman guard Robert Wright III has entered his name into the transfer portal. The former five-star prospect is expected to be one of the most heavily recruited players on the market.

During his freshman season at Baylor, Wright made 35 appearances, 21 of which found him in the starting lineup. He averaged 11.5 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 4.2 steals per-game in just under 30 minutes of action per contest, shooting 41.1% from the floor (including just over 35% from three-point range).

While he had multiple 20+ point outings, his best performance came in an overtime victory over Kansas on February 1. Competing against the then-ranked No. 11 team in the country, Wright III finished with a season-high 24 points to go along with six assists, playing a major role in a huge victory for the Baylor Bears.

After losing Elliot Cadeau to the transfer portal, the UNC basketball program has a glaring need at the point guard position. While some previous portal entrants seemed like fits, it always felt like the Tar Heels were waiting for the right guy to enter his name into the transfer portal.

Could Robert Wright III be that guy?

Wright would be a major addition for the UNC basketball program, as adding an elite talent like him would go a long way in helping reshape next year's roster. The competition will be steep, but Jim Tanner, Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels must do everything in their power to ensure that Wright's next stop in his college career takes him to Chapel Hill, as he has the makings of being the next great point guard to wear the Carolina Blue uniform.
