Tar Heel of the Game for UNC Women's Basketball's victory over Charleston Southern
The UNC women's basketball program started the season strong with a 30-point victory over Charleston Southern on Monday morning in Chapel Hill.
Courtney Banghart's team received contributions from the entire active roster, as 11 of the 12 Tar Heels scored in the victory. From returners to newcomers, it's a win that proved that this squad has a lot of talent and depth to rely on for the 2024-2025 season.
As we'll do for the men's team as well, it's time to name our first Tar Heel(s) of the Game for the win over Charleston Southern. While we will typically stick with one recipient per game, two UNC women's basketball players deserve a shoutout.
Side note: Alyssa Ustby is a baller and will win this award many times this season. For opening day, we chose to highlight two newcomers:
Blanca Thomas
Talk about making an impact right away!
Thomas came off the bench to make her UNC women's basketball debut and was highly productive. The freshman scored eight points on 4-6 shooting while recording 6 rebounds in just 14 minutes of action.
On her first defensive trip down the floor, Thomas introduced herself to the college basketball world with this impressive block.
Courtney Banghart has stated that Thomas is a very capable option for this year's team, and I truly think she was keeping Thomas' ability under wraps. After her opening day performance, there's no doubt that Thomas will make a huge impact for the Tar Heels this season.
Trayanna Crisp
Trayanna Crisp showed why the Tar Heels were so adamant about landing her as a transfer this offseason.
In her UNC women's basketball debut, Crisp scored 11 points while knocking down four of her six shot attempts. The junior guard also recorded two assists and two steals in her 14 minutes of action.
While the bench minutes were evenly spread out in the season opener, expect Crisp to earn a much bigger role for this team as the year goes on.
