Scott Van Pelt is just like all of us.

The long-time ESPN sportscaster joined the Field of 68 show on Thursday afternoon, as the topic of the current state of the UNC basketball program was brought up.

Van Pelt is baffled with what we're seeing from one of the most historic programs in all of college basketball.

"Listen, I worked with Hubert (Davis), I adore the man. Everyone does, he's the greatest human on Earth. But North Carolina is North Carolina. (NC) State went on a run last year and made the Final Four and that probably saved a man's job but, you can't be once every couple years you go on a run. You're North Carolina! I'm just amazed.

I watched them against Pitt, and it's like, Jay (Williams) called them out and he's going to take crap for it because he's a Duke guy but he's not wrong. I just can't wrap my head around the idea that it's okay for Carolina to just be okay or maybe (go on a run) every couple years. You just have too many built-in advantages."

Van Pelt is correct in saying that the UNC basketball program should never be just "okay." Given the history of the program, it is unacceptable to mix good years and bad years so frequently, a trend that must quickly come to an end before it truly gets out of hand.

Now, Van Pelt isn't sitting her calling for Hubert Davis' job. However, the writing on the wall is indicating that everyone who follows the college basketball world closely is monitoring the situation in Chapel Hill, as there are many who believe Davis' job could be in jeopardy if the Tar Heels fail to make the NCAA Tournament for the second time in four seasons with him at the helm.
