Seth Trimble puts together a career performance in exhibition win over Memphis
The UNC basketball program opened up exhibition play by defeating Memphis in the first annual St. Jude Tip Off Classic.
While the score doesn't necessarily matter, it is a measure of where the UNC basketball program is with just under three weeks remaining before the start of the regular season.
In our first real look at this year's UNC basketball squad, here's some takeaways:
They weren't kidding when they said Seth Trimble was poised for a HUGE season! The rising junior's career-high in points in the regular season is 12. In this scrimmage, Trimble scored 33 points as he was simply incredible on both ends of the floor.
There's been plenty of talk about Trimble competing for the ACC Sixth Man of the Year Award, but those discussions may stop quickly due to the fact that he's making a very strong case to be a starter on this team.
Elliot Cadeau showed that he's ready to take a major leap in his second season on campus, finishing the night with a double-double performance. Although he had some questionable turnovers toward the end of the game, Cadeau did a great job facilitating the offense, leading the way with 13 assists.
Jalen Washington was extremely impressive offensively, knocking down six of his seven shot attempts. The junior big man showed his ability to stretch the floor by knocking down both of his three-point field goal attempts, an area that should help the Tar Heels space the floor more.
Oh yeah, the UNC basketball program scored 84 points without ACC Player of the Year and First-Team All-American RJ Davis.
Of course, there's definitely room for improvement. Early on, the Tar Heels came out rather flat, as they struggled rebounding the basketball. The good news was that as the game went on, the team settled down, as evident of their early run to begin the second half.
Three-point shooting was not in favor of the Tar Heels in this one, as they connected on just eight of 24 attempts. This team will definitely need to shoot better from deep as a whole (which should go without saying).
In his UNC basketball debut, Cade Tyson had his fair share of struggles. The Belmont transfer connected on just three of 10 shots, including one of six from beyond-the-arc, as it felt like he struggled throughout to get settled. Hubert Davis was visably upset on multiple occasions when Tyson passed up open shots, something that they'll stress to him not to do moving forward.
In terms of the freshmen, let's just say they played like freshmen in their first real college action. Drake Powell was the best of the group, finishing with a positive plus/minus, but you can tell that these newcomers are still very much a work in progress.
A sluggish start and a sluggish end to the game aren't areas that are going to make Hubert Davis happy, and toughness throughout (especially on the glass) needs to be a focal point. However, this scrimmage was great in terms of competing against a quality opponent, as the film collected in this one will help prepare the UNC basketball program for opening night.
