There are simply no words. Once up double-digits and looking like they were going to cruise to a win, North Carolina totally dropped the ball and somehow lost in overtime to VCU. Sorry, but this may end up being the end for Hubert Davis, as this loss is inexcusable.
Pathetic UNC meltdown has to be the last straw for Hubert Davis
You can go ahead and pinpoint several different moments that will come back to haunt the Heels, but there's one in particular that has us fuming. It's of course the 5-second call on UNC late, which opened the door for VCU to get the rock back, score an easy bucket and force overtime. If you thought you were mad, imagine how Davis was feeling. Well, it turns out assistant coach and Tar Heel great Marcus Paige was also downright furious:
Marcus Paige about broke his clipboard in half after that 5-second call.

UNC legend Marcus Paige was all of us during the Tar Heels' late-game collapse
What made that sequence all the more frustrating was that Davis had a timeout. Was he saving it for next season? He saw that VCU was all over his players and yet he didn't even think to call a TO and draw up a different play.
Did that moment alone force UNC to totally blow it against the Rams? Not at all, but we can't ignore the fact that it also allowed the mid-major program to force overtime and then make the needed buckets in the extra session to take down an ACC powerhouse.
You've got to feel bad for the Tar Heels, but you've also got to be terribly disappointed with how poorly coached the entire group was when it mattered most. This isn't on Paige, but it sure is on Davis, as he was once again not prepared under the bright lights.
Already, there's talks going on that maybe, just maybe the Tar Heels will be ready to move on and end the Davis era. No one will ever question that Hubert has meant so much to the program, but after this latest setback, it won't be a shock at all if Bubba Cunningham steps in and makes the move that fans are essentially begging for. Davis just isn't getting the job done.
