It is not easy to have your jersey honored by the UNC basketball program.

In fact, of the thousands of student-athletes who proudly wore the Carolina Blue uniform, only 51 former players have their jerseys hanging in the rafters of the Dean E. Smith Center. Of these 51 players, eight have their number officially retired, while the remaining 43 are honored for achieving specific accolades like National Player of the Year or Olympic Gold medals.

We can officially add No. 52 to the rafters, as North Carolina announced that RJ Davis' No. 4 will be added next week.

RJ Davis to have his No. 4 jersey honored

The UNC basketball program announced that it will honor Davis as part of a halftime ceremony on Monday night when the Tar Heels host Louisville. This unveiling comes just under a year after Davis played his last game as a Tar Heel.

How did RJ Davis earn the accolade?

While his number won't be taken out of circulation, it will be among the honored jerseys. Davis earned that by securing the ACC Player of the Year Award for the 2023-2024 season, an incredible season that left Tar Heel fans in awe for just how dominant of a year he put together.

His ACC Player of the Year honor isn't all that he accomplished while wearing the Carolina Blue uniform:

UNC fans got to enjoy watching Davis play for five seasons in Chapel Hill, a run in which he became one of the most decorated athletes in program history. The school's second all-time leading scorer,
Davis was a major part of the Tar Heels' national championship game run in 2022, a year in which many believed the UNC basketball program wasn't even an NCAA Tournament-caliber squad. As his career in Chapel Hill progressed, Davis continued to get better, becoming one of the country's elite scorers in all three areas on the floor.

While his professional career is just underway, his legacy at North Carolina is firmly cemented. The program is wasting no time in raising his jersey into the rafters, joining the other legendary Tar Heels who put together illustrious careers during their time in Chapel Hill.
