When would Mack Brown like to have a decision on a starting quarterback?
Mack Brown is no stranger to quarterback competitions leading up to a new college football season.
The legendary head coach has dealt with plenty of positional battles during his Hall of Fame career, as another one is brewing over the next couple of weeks in Chapel Hill.
With just under a month away from opening kickoff, all eyes are on the UNC football program's quarterback battle, as Max Johnson and Conner Harrell will battle it out for the starting gig. Following the Tar Heels' first practice of fall camp on Monday night, Brown was asked if he has a timeline for naming his starter.
Brown seems to have a pretty definitive answer as to when the decision could be made:
"What I've liked, in my experience, is about 10 days or a week before the start (of the season). Let him be the starter, so he's comfortable talking to the team as the starter, and also let him talk to you all (the media) before the game. I've never been one of those guys that says, 'You'll see at game time.'"
Brown explained to the media that he likes to have a decision within a week to 10 days of the season opener, as he wants the player to be able to take on the reins of being the program's starting quarterback. He also won't hide his decision until opening kickoff, as the Tar Heels head coach says that the team's starting quarterback for the season opener will speak to the media prior to the August 29 contest against Minnesota.
For now, fans can keep tabs on what is going on in Chapel Hill, but don't expect a decision for a couple of weeks. When the decision is finally made, Brown and the UNC football program will be sure to let the world know which quarterback has earned the job out of the gate.
