Well, it just wasn't the UNC basketball program's night
The UNC basketball program's 10-game winning streak has come to an end, as the Tar Heels suffered a loss to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to close out the month of January.
There will be plenty of talk about the final 4.4 seconds of play, as RJ Davis was clearly fouled on a drive to the basket. North Carolina's good friend Ted Valentine elected to ignore the foul once again (based on his history with the Tar Heels, are you even surprised?), resulting in a one-point loss.
As frustrating as that factor is, it would be wrong to not state the obvious: this just wasn't the Tar Heels night.
You're not going to win many games when you turn the ball over and fail to hit open shots, as only RJ Davis (28 points) scored in double-figures for the Tar Heels.
Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan combined to shoot 6-28 from the floor.
Armando Bacot was benched early in the second half, as Hubert Davis was clearly frustrated with his effort on the defensive side of the ball.
Elliot Cadeau played just over seven minutes in the second half, picking up all five of his questionable fouls in the process.
As a team, the Tar Heels missed eight of their 17 free throw attempts. Georgia Tech, who is one of the worst free throw shooting teams around, connected on 15 of its 17 tries.
North Carolina also took 16 more shots than Georgia Tech did, as the opportunities were totally there to win this game.
Unlike the recent stretch, on this night, it wasn't in the cards for the UNC basketball program.
Could this team have been looking ahead to Saturday? Of course it has to be on the back of their minds. However, this was a true "trap game," one that Damon Stoudamire and his team took full advantage of on their home court.
This team has faced some adversity this season, but this is a real true test for them. With rival Duke on the horizon, it will be interesting to see how this group responds in a couple of days, as the Tar Heels that were red-hot just didn't come to play on Tuesday night.
Blame who you want, but this one is totally on the boys in Carolina blue. The good news is, tomorrow's a new day, and there's still plenty of motivation to get back on track by the end of the week.
