Vince Carter to be elected into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

Vince Carter is heading to Springfield, Massachusetts!

As first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic, the former UNC basketball star will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2024. Former Detroit Pistons guard Chauncey Billups will join Carter as a member of the class, as the official announcement will take place on Saturday at the NCAA Final Four.

The former Tar Heel has a long list of achievements throughout his basketball career. During his time at North Carolina, he was named third-team All-ACC in 1997, first-team All-ACC, and a consensus second-team All-American in 1998. His No. 15 jersey is hanging in the Dean Smith Center rafters as an honored jersey.

During his lengthy 22-year NBA career from 1998 until 2020, with eight different teams, Carter continued to rack up the accolades, beginning his rookie season as he was named Rookie of the Year and All-Rookie First Team. He made the all-NBA third team in 2000 and the all-NBA second team in 2001, along with being an NBA All-Star a remarkable eight times.

Carter will become the 13th Tar Heel to be inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame. He will join Dean Smith, Roy Williams, Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Larry Brown, Charlie Scott, Frank McGuire, George Karl, Billy Cunningham, Bobby Jones, Bob McAdoo, and Ben Carnavale as Tar Heels who have earned basketball's most prestigious honor.

In his first year of eligibility, it isn't surprising that Carter will be inducted as a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He put together a tremendous career and will now take his rightful place among the greatest to ever participate in the sport.
