On Sunday evening, some surprising news regarding the UNC women's basketball program surfaced on social media.

Lanie Grant, a UNC women's basketball commit and the No. 22 overall player in ESPN’s Class of 2025 rankings, has announced that she will reclassify into the Class of 2024.

Grant is the reigning Gatorade Virginia Girls Basketball Player of the Year, as she's coming off a season in which she averaged a staggering 28.1 points per game while leading James River High School to the state championship game. Given all she's accomplished at the high school level, Grant believes she's ready for the next level, as she'll arrive in Chapel Hill this upcoming summer.

North Carolina has some wiggle room on it's upcoming roster, especially given the recent news that Paulina Paris will enter the transfer portal. As of now, the UNC women's basketball program has a few scholarships to work with, as that number could increase if more players elect to head elsewhere this offseason.

After bringing in a five-player class a year ago, the Tar Heels will now bring in another three players to the mix. Grant will join Blanca Thomas and Jordan Zubich among the UNC women's basketball program's 2024 class, as it is a trio that aims to make an immediate impact once they arrive on campus this summer.

Given Grant's scoring ability, her reclassifying could really help next year's squad right away. With lack of depth at the guard position down the stretch, it will be refreshing to have some additional depth options, especially if Kayla McPherson and Reniya Kelly can return to full strength as well.

There will be plenty of attention on what next year's roster will look like, as some big decisions are looming for Courtney Banghart's squad. We now know that another roster spot will be filled, as another talented incoming freshman is ready to begin her collegiate career this fall.
