Alexandra Zelaya made a profound impact on the UNC women's basketball program both on and off the court, as she'll now take her talents to UNC Wilmington to complete her collegiate career.

Zelaya is one of the students who benefits from having an additional season of eligibility due to COVID. As we've discussed earlier in the offseason, some fifth-year players, such as Zelaya and Anya Poole, have elected to find a home elsewhere for their final season of eligibility.

Sure, North Carolina would have loved to have brought back all of last year's seniors, but the COVID year definitely impacts rosters across the country.

Zelaya will now bring her experience from Chapel Hill with her to UNCW, as she'll look to make an immediate impact on her new team's front court. She's a player who can make an impact on both sides of the floor, as she's a viable defensive presence and also showed the ability to stretch the floor on the offensive side of the court.

Zelaya's new head coach, Nicole Woods, had very high praise for her new post player:

"Ali is one of the best human beings you will ever meet. She is just as good as aย basketball player," She will anchor the middle defensively as well as be a threat inside and out at 6-4. Today is a huge step for our program!"

Zelaya won't need to travel very far for her next destination, as UNC Wilmington is approximately just over two hours and 15 minutes away from Chapel Hill. Although her career will end with another squad, Alexandra Zelaya will always be a Tar Heel, as her impact on the University of North Carolina goes much deeper than what she accomplished on the basketball court.
