UNC Football: Mack Brown's Version of 'Reputation' storied by Taylor Swift lyrics
Swifties have inundated the internet with theories pointing to the imminent release of Reputation TV. Again and again, they get clowned, as Taylor Swift has closed the Wembley leg of her record-breaking Eras tour and is on a short break.
She will resume her tour in October at Hard Rock Stadium, the site of one of the most vicious beatings the Miami Hurricanes ever endured at the hands of the Gruesome Twosome.
While there is no Taylor's Version of Reputation to listen to right now, we can look at some of her best lyrics and see how they apply to the upcoming North Carolina football season.
Let's dive in!
"Knew he was a killer, first time that I saw him" - ...Ready For It
Omarion Hampton came to Chapel Hill a grown man. Dude is built out of bricks and bad intentions. But some fumbles and special teams miscues cut into his playing time during his freshman year.
Those defects have largely been cleaned up, ignoring some fluky mishaps during last season's Clemson game. Hampton proved to be one of the best running backs in college football, and he will only be more important as the UNC football program begins its first season of Mack 2.0 without a bonafide star at quarterback. He's already stacking up preseason accolades. He's certainly ready for regular-season success. And if the passing game isn't ready to win games, he can be running off and never saying sorry.
"My reputation's never been worse, so you must like me for me" - Delicate
Travis Shaw came to Chapel Hill with hype, fanfare, and so far, little to show for it. The five-star, 6'6" defensive lineman from famed Grimsley High School in Greensboro, NC never nailed down a starting position, didn't look like he had the cardio to stay in games, and didn't make the sort of impact expected of such a premier recruit.
But by all accounts, he has looked trimmer this summer and he finds himself suddenly an upperclassman on a team with a new defensive coordinator. Will Geoff Collins be able to get the best out of Shaw? There aren't many other coaches you'd want to see try. The Minister of Mayhem should get Shaw primed for a breakout season. Just think of the fun things we could do.
"I got smarter, I got harder, in the nick of time" - Look What You Made Me Do
The UNC football program has a quarterback controversy (or at least competition) for the first time in years. Junior Conner Harrell looked impressive in the Duke's Mayo Bowl against West Virginia until he dinged his ankle, killing his speed and forcing him into some bad throws.
Mack Brown brought in Texas A&M transfer Max Johnson early in the transfer window, and with his SEC pedigree and experience, you'd think he has the edge in the quarterback competition. If Harrell wants to start, he'll have to show that he understands the offense better (he's been in Chip Lindsey's system for a year longer) and that he can make it through a game without getting injured.
So far he's 0 for 1.
Health will be important for Harrell because his physical tools are enticing. Max Johnson may win the starting job for Week 1, but don't lock Harrell out then throw a feast.
"And all at once, you are the one I have been waiting for" - King of My Heart
North Carolina has had a string of wide receivers that have made an impact in Chapel Hill before heading to the NFL. We were robbed of a full season of Tez Walker and none of the returning receivers quite have the star quality of a Dyami Brown or Josh Downs.
Enter freshman flanker Jordan Shipp. The four-star recruit from Providence Day in Charlotte is one to watch. He has top-end speed, clean breaks, solid hands, and is tough in traffic. He caught 16 touchdowns in 11 games during his senior season in high school and averaged 18.1 yards per reception.
Look for him to see the field sooner rather than later. Adding Shipp as a weapon will be Lonnie Galloway's idea of luxury.
" 'X' marks the spot where we fell apart" - Getaway Car
Statistically, North Carolina has one of the easiest schedules in the country. That doesn't mean the Tar Heels can't royally screw it up. Look at week seven and eight. Home against Georgia Tech, followed by a trip to Virginia. Two bogey teams that have given the Tar Heels fits in recent seasons despite the UNC football program being betting favorites.
North Carolina must win these two games because the next one is a trip to Tallahassee to face ACC-favorite Florida State. If the UNC football program drops either or both of the games against Georgia Tech and Virginia, a must-win game against Florida State will feel like a shotgun shot to the heart.
