UNC Football: Amare Campbell suffers preseason injury

Will the injury keep the UNC football program's projected starting middle linebacker from playing in the season opener?

Amare Campbell is expected to be a major part of the UNC football program's defensive unit during the 2024 season.

Campbell is slated to take over as a starter at the linebacker position, as he'll help fill the void left by the departure of Cedric Gray to the NFL. He'll be tasked with working alongside Power Echols to form a formidable duo in the middle of the Tar Heels defense.

Just a few weeks prior to the start of the 2024 season, Campbell suffered an injury that certainly has the program holding its breath.

According to Inside Carolina, Campbell suffered a broken right hand. The report stated that Campbell was spotted in a cast and did not participate in team practice sessions over the weekend.

The good news is that Campbell is expected to return to practice soon and isn't projected to miss any regular-season contests due to the injury.

Sure, it's an injury that Campbell can likely play with, as he'll probably sport a club on his injured hand until it's fully healed. However, you must hold your breath in a case like this, especially given what Campbell means to this team's defensive unit.

To add to his importance, the Tar Heels are rather weak in terms of depth at the linebacker position, as it's heavily important that both Campbell and Echols stay healthy throughout. While the practice reps will be good for some of the team's younger linebackers, the hope is that Campbell can return to action soon to help get him ready for the season opener on August 29 at Minnesota.
