UNC Basketball: RJ Davis named the ACC Player of the Year for the 2023-2024 season

It's official: RJ Davis of the UNC basketball program is the 2023-2024 ACC Player of the Year!

The White Plains, New York native put together a senior season to remember, as he led the UNC Basketball program to a 25-6 season and the ACC regular season title.

Overall, Davis led the ACC in scoring, averaging 21.1 points per-game. He put together some memorable games this past season, including a 36-point effort against Wake Forrest along with a 42-point outing against Miami. The 42 points that Davis scored against the Hurricanes set a new single-game record for points by a Tar Heel at the Dean Smith Center, passing Tyler Hansbrough's original mark of 40.

Not only has Davis been one of the most effective scorers in the country, he's been getting it done on the defensive side of the ball as well. He put an emphasis on his defense, as he played a large role in the Tar Heels being one of the top defensive teams in the country, especially early on in the season.

Davis becomes the first Tar Heel since Justin Jackson (2016-2017) to be named the ACC Player of the Year, as the UNC basketball program has now had 16 recipients of this award since joining the conference in 1953.

The Tar Heel's star earned 68 votes, as the next closest earned only three total votes. Kyle Filipowski finished second in voting, while PJ Hall, Armando Bacot and Quentin Post all received votes.

You couldn't have drawn up a better senior season for Davis, who put together a historical season individually while leading this year's team to a conference championship banner at the Smith Center.

Now that he's officially earned the ACC Player of the Year Award, Davis has met the criteria to have his number honored in the rafters as well. Based on how his career, especially his senior season has gone, it probably won't take long after his UNC basketball career comes to an end for that to happen.

Oh, and he could potentially come back for a fifth season if he chooses to.
