UNC basketball program has reached out to one of the top available transfers
Hubert Davis was adamant that the UNC basketball program wouldn't focus on the transfer portal while the season was still ongoing.
Now that the 2023-2024 season has come to a close, the Tar Heels are focused on building next year's roster.
According to Sherrell McMillan of Inside Carolina, the UNC basketball program has contacted one of the top available players in the transfer portal.
That player is Cade Tyson, a standout at Belmont who was among the top three-point shooters in the country this past season.
The last name might sound familiar for Tar Heels fans, as Cade is the younger brother of former Clemson standout Hunter Tyson. He is someone who also has in-state ties, as he is a Monroe, North Carolina native.
Tyson entered the transfer portal on March 25 and has been a hot commodity since. The 2022-23 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) freshman of the year, Tyson is ranked the No. 18 player in the transfer portal by 247Sports. He has received interest from schools such as (but not limited to): Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kansas, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Stanford, Texas, Villanova, Virginia, and Virginia Tech.
This past season, Tyson was a lethal offensive weapon, averaging 16.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Based on the NCAA's criteria for three-point shooting percentage, Tyson ranks second nationally for the 2023-2024 season.
With Cormac Ryan departing, along with the pending decisions for the likes of RJ Davis and Harrison Ingram, finding legitimate scoring options will be at the top of the UNC basketball program's to-do list. There were rumblings regarding a potential connection to the Tar Heels prior to North Carolina's officially reaching out, as the 6-foot-7 standout might look to return to his home state for his next stop in his career.
The next few weeks will be very interesting for the UNC basketball program, as some decisions made by potential returners will certainly impact next season's roster.
Have no fear: Hubert Davis and his staff are exploring every option available to help improve next year's team, and Cade Tyson seems to make a lot of sense as the Tar Heels look to fulfill their roster needs.
