Don't you just love a good-ole fashion homecoming!

That's exactly the case for Shea Sprague, as the left-hander was selected by his hometown team, the Boston Red Sox, in the 2024 MLB Draft.

Sprague joined the UNC baseball program prior to the 2024 season, as he transferred in from Elon. The Hanover, Massachusetts native started the season in the bullpen but quickly transitioned into the starting rotation as the Diamond Heels dealt with various injuries.

Challenged with a bigger role, Sprague responded, as he became the Tar Heels No. 2 starter behind freshman ace Jason DeCaro.

Over 17 appearances (15 starts), Sprague posted a 3-2 record with a 4.25 ERA. A second-team All-ACC selection, Sprague isn't a guy who will overpower a hitter, but his lethal changeup and elite command make him a very tough left-hander to face.

Now, similar to Dalton Pence (who was selected by the Texas Rangers), Sprague would have an additional season of eligibility to work with if he so chooses. However, could you blame him if he decides to sign with the team he likely rooted for growing up?

This seems like the perfect opportunity for Sprague to begin his professional career.

The UNC baseball program brought in some very important transfers last offseason, as Sprague was definitely one of them. He made a major impact in the Diamond Heels' rotation, as he was able to step up in a huge way to help guide the Tar Heels back to Omaha.
