UNC Baseball program sets school record for most All-ACC selections in a season
It was a historic regular season for the UNC baseball program, as the All-ACC honors are a testament to the program's success.
On Monday, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced its postseason honors for the 2024 regular season. Not only was Scott Forbes tabbed as the ACC Coach of the Year and Vance Honeycutt once again earning the conference's defensive player of the year award, the Diamond Heels had 11, yes, 11 players earn respective All-ACC honors.
Let's begin with the First-Team All-ACC honors, as outfielders Vance Honeycutt and Casey Cook represent the Tar Heels among the conference's best.
Honeycutt had another Vance Honeycutt type season, as he recorded his second 20-20 season of his career. He led the ACC in runs scored while finishing in second in both home runs and runs batted in.
Cook had a monster season at the plate, as he set new career highs in every statistical category. He finished the season with the seventh-highest batting average in the conference, as he was a force at the top portion of the Diamond Heels lineup.
A trio of Diamond Heels earned second-team honors, as Parks Harber, Jason DeCaro and Shea Sprague earned this recognition.
Harber was a big-time transfer addition for North Carolina, as his ability to hit for power added even more depth to an already very talented Diamond Heels offense. With some injuries in the starting rotation, DeCaro (a freshman) and Sprague embraced their opportunity and developed into the team's most reliable starting pitchers.
To wrap up the All-ACC teams, Dalton Pence, Matthew Matthijs and Luke Stevenson earned third-team honors.
Pence and Matthijs were lethal weapons out of the bullpen, while Stevenson, in his freshman season, instantly fulfilled the void behind the plate left by Tomas Frick (who was drafted by the New York Yankees).
To add to these honors, DeCaro, Stevenson and infielder Gavin Gallaher were all named to the All-ACC Freshman Team.
Plenty of guys contributed to the UNC baseball program's success during the 2024 season, as it's nice to see that the conference is taking notice of the individual success from some of the team's standout players.
