Transfer guard no longer considering the UNC basketball program

Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program have explored multiple options to improve next year's roster, including taking a closer look at some notable guards.

Although the Tar Heels' priority is on the frontcourt, the program did show interest in a few guards, including Oregon State's Jordan Pope.

North Carolina was one of many teams to express interest in Pope, who averaged 17.6 points per game last season. However, the Tar Heels did not make the cut in his recruitment, as its now down to just two programs.

As first reported by Joe Tipton of On3, Pope is focused on two schools in the same state: Texas and Texas A&M. He is scheduled to announce his transfer destination on Wednesday.

Now, it was always a longshot for the Tar Heels to add guard depth via the transfer portal, especially players who expect to start for their next program. North Carolina has ample guard depth (and could have even more if RJ Davis elects to return), as the need right now is primarily within the frontcourt.

Pope seemed to feel like an Option B for the Tar Heels if Davis elected to turn pro, but as we continue to officially hear word about Davis' future, it seems more and more likely that he will spend a fifth season in Chapel Hill given the current circumstances.

At this point, Davis and the Tar Heels staff likely know what Davis is planning on doing, as they will certainly look to build the roster around him if he does elect to return. The timing and fit for Jordan Pope simply wasn't right, as he's looking at two Texas-based programs to continue his college basketball career.
