The UNC football program is set to bring back a tradition from the Mack Brown 1.0 era

Back when Mack Brown first was at the helm of the UNC football program, fans got to see the players helmets filled with stickers.

These stickers weren't just for show, as they signified when that particular student-athlete did something well on the field. The tradition got lost along the way when Brown departed to Texas, but it's good to know that its set to come back this fall.

Helmet stickers will return for the UNC football program this fall, as it provides additional incentive for players to succeed on Saturdays. The program announced the return with the above social media post, as Brown also commented on it while speaking to the media on Friday afternoon.

Now, how does one get a helmet sticker? Well, in the official press release from Go Heels, some types of examples were provided:

If the Tar Heels win their season opener at Minnesota, every player's helmet will have a decal added for the home opener against Charlotte.

If a running back rushes for 100 yards or gains 50 percent of his yards after contact, he gets a decal.

If an offensive lineman executes a pancake block, he gets a decal.

If a linebacker has 10 or more tackles, he gets a decal.

If the kick-off team stops the opponent inside the 20, everyone on the unit gets a decal.

Basically, when a player achieves a certain statistical goal, a helmet sticker is awarded to them for their efforts.

You got to love the idea of bringing this back, as it provides additional motivation for the players. Sure, you may be one of those people who think "why do athletes need motivation to win?" but in the long run, it does add to the competitve edge that the players bring forward come game day.
