The UNC Baseball program is heading to the Super Regionals!!!
HOW ABOUT THEM TAR HEELS!!!!!!!!
The UNC baseball program found a way to get the job done in a winner-take-all game in the Chapel Hill Regional final on Monday night against LSU.
From the onset, the Diamond Heels got off to a strong start. Three consecutive singles got the Tar Heels, who were the "away" team once again, going from the jump, as they scored two runs in the opening frame to put the pressure on the defending national champions.
However, LSU would eventually tie the game and take the lead, as the Tigers pitching gave the Tar Heels offense trouble throughout the middle innings of the game.
Fast forward to the ninth inning, as the Tar Heels came to bat trailing by one. With a runner on second base with one out, Colby Wilkerson came up clutch with an RBI single to tie the game, as the game would ultimately head to extras.
North Carolina once again had an opportunity to score in the 10th inning, as Alex Madera served as the clutch performer in this instance. Madera worked an eight-pitch at-bat, one that resulted in an RBI single to re-take the lead, as the Tar Heels would hold the lead from there to secure their trip to the Super Regionals.
Both teams saw tremendous pitching performances from their respective bullpens. For the UNC baseball program, Matthew Matthijs, after allowing a run in the third inning, was brilliant, as he allowed just two hits over 4.1 innings of work. Dalton Pence was even better, as he finished off the final 3.2 thirds allowing just one hit to a very talented LSU offense.
It was a game that felt like it was destined to go in LSU's favor, but the Diamond Heels somehow found a way. Now, they'll advance to the Super Regionals, as they'll host West Virginia for a best of three series at Boshamer Stadium this weekend.
