THE UNC BASEBALL PROGRAM IS HEADING TO OMAHA!
For the first time since 2018, the UNC baseball program is heading to Omaha!
In front of a sold-out record crowd at Boshamer Stadium, the Diamond Heels secured a trip to the College World Series with a 2-1 nail-biting victory over West Virginia.
Serving as the "away team" for game two of the series, it didn't take the Tar Heels long to get on the board.
In fact, it took just one pitch.
Not even 24 hours after ending game one with a walk-off homer, Vance Honeycutt did it again, hitting the first pitch he saw over the left field fence.
A Parks Harber RBI single in the third inning would be the only run that the Diamond Heels would put on the board, but fortunately, that's all they needed.
Freshman right-hander Jason DeCaro was outstanding, as he pitched into the seventh inning. He kept the Mountaineers offense at bay, allowing just two hits and one earned run over his 6.1 innings of work.
Although DeCaro made his case to stay in the game, Scott Forbes believed it was time to turn the game over to the pen, as left-hander Dalton Pence was called upon to get the final eight outs. Pence allowed the RBI single to Kyle West (who else, of course) that put West Virginia on the board, but the run that scored was one that DeCaro was responsible for.
The Mountaineers got both the potential tying and winning runs on base as they loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Pence was able to dial in and get the final out to clinch the UNC baseball program's ticket to Omaha.
This will be the first time that the Diamond Heels will advance to the College World Series during the Scott Forbes era, as the former assistant coach made seven previous appearances to the College World Series. It's been a special season in Chapel Hill, as the UNC baseball program hopes that they have a few more wins in them as they'll participate in the College World Series!
As always, it's a GREAT DAY TO BE A TAR HEEL!
