The trip to Greensboro ends in disappointment for the UNC women's basketball program
Early on, it felt like the UNC women's basketball program was on the verge of a double-digit victory in their second round contest of the ACC Tournament.
However, that wasn't the case, as the Tar Heels fell apart en route to a loss to the Miami Hurricanes on Thursday afternoon in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Up seven after one quarter, the Tar Heels were red-hot from the floor, shooting over 50% through the first half of play. North Carolina was able to earn a lead by as much as 14, but a second half collapse got the better of the team in Carolina Blue.
After that 50% shooting mark in the first half, the Tar Heels couldn't buy a bucket in the second half, shooting a disappointing 23.3% over the final 20 minutes of action. To add to this, the Tar Heels went over five and a half minutes without a bucket in the fourth quarter, as they finished the game making just one of their final 12 attempts.
The final minutes of action were simply ugly on both sides, as the Hurricanes provided the Tar Heels with multiple opportunities to regain the lead. However, the Tar Heels matched the mistakes, as a Lexi Donarski errant pass into the post, an offensive foul called on Anya Poole as well as Deja Kelly dribbling into a double-team in the closing seconds down one were all plays that came back to haunt them.
Yes, the whole 40 minutes of a game matter, but in the closing minutes, those types of things tend to stand out even more.
It seems like this is the narrative with this year's team: get out to a strong start and fizzle out along the way. The stop in Greensboro didn't last as long as the UNC women's basketball program hoped it would, but now the Tar Heels must head back home and prepare for the NCAA Tournament, one that they hope they can make a run in.
