The starting pitching matchup for LSU/UNC baseball round two is set
Get ready for round two!
After defeating Wofford earlier in the day, the LSU Tigers, the defending national champions, have earned a spot in the Chapel Hill Regional finals. They will match up with the UNC baseball program, who defeated them not even 24 hours ago in the winner's bracket matchup.
Ahead of Sunday night's rematch, we now know the expected starting pitching matchup.
As previously announced, Aidan Haugh will get the ball for the Diamond Heels. The junior right-hander comes in with a 4-1 record to go along with a 4.07 ERA in 20 appearances (six starts) this season.
Thatcher Hurd will get the nod for LSU. The right-hander has struggled this season, posting a 2-4 record with a 7.04 ERA over 17 appearances (eight starts).
It will be interesting to see how both managers utilize their respective pitching staffs, especially with LSU having their backs against the wall in a must-win game. The Tigers likely won't be able to use relief ace Griffin Herring, who threw 90 pitches over 6.1 innings of work in relief earlier today, while it will remain to be seen if Scott Forbes goes to Dalton Pence, who has thrown nearly 60 pitches over the last two days, for a third consecutive day.
If last night's game was any indication, the rematch should be another exciting game between two of the best teams in the country.
Can North Carolina capture the regional title this evening, or will LSU find a way to extend the regional to a winner-takes-all game on Monday?
First pitch at Boshamer Stadium is scheduled for 6:06 PM EST, as the game will be televised live on ESPNU.
