Scott Jackson reportedly set to rejoin the UNC baseball program's coaching staff
Scott Jackson is reportedly coming home.
On Thursday, it was reported that Jackson, a UNC baseball assistant coach under Mike Fox from 2009 to 2016, resigned as the head coach at Liberty. It's expected that Jackson will return to Chapel Hill and will rejoin the Diamond Heels staff as an assistant coach.
Jackson spent eight seasons at the helm at Liberty, as the Flames had a 246–181 record under his direction. He led the program to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including an Atlantic Sun Championship and a program record 43 win season in 2019.
In his first stint with the Diamond Heels, Jackson served as a assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Mike Fox's squad. While his future role hasn't been determined yet, it's pretty safe to say that he'll be a significant addition for the UNC baseball program moving forward.
With his departure from Liberty, the current players on the Flames' roster have a new window to enter the transfer portal. It will be interesting to see if any of his players elect to follow him to Chapel Hill, as some notable players (such as Kane Kepley, Ryan Butler and Tanner Marsh) have already put their names into the transfer portal.
The Diamond Heels are set to lose a lot of talent this offseason and could look to the transfer portal to help replenish some of the depth they will lose due to the MLB Draft and exhausted collegiate eligibility. A player like Kepley, a left-handed hitting outfielder from Salisbury, North Carolina, could make a lot of sense for the Diamond Heels as they potentially will lose all three starting outfielders from this year's squad.
This is a big-time addition for Scott Forbes' coaching staff, as Jackson returns to the Diamond Heels with some valuable head coaching experience as well as a strong familiarity with the UNC baseball program as a whole.
