RJ Davis tabbed as Sporting News first-team All-American
By Jordan Falls
Yesterday, UNC Basketball guard RJ Davis was named the 2023-2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year. That honor alone met the criteria for Davis to have his No. 4 jersey to be honored in the Dean E. Smith Center rafters when his time at North Carolina comes to an end.
Davis continued to earn more accolades on Tuesday as he was named a First-Team All-American by the Sporting News.
This will likely not be the last national accolade that Davis earns, as he was one of the best guards in the country this season, averaging 21.1 points per game. That number ranks him as the 17th-highest scorer in college basketball and fifth nationally among Power Five schools.
The Sporting News listed the "defining game" for Davis as his incredible and historic performance against the Miam Hurricanes in Chapel Hill. In that game he posted 42 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals in a 75-71 victory for the Tar Heels.
Of course, it wasn't just one game that set Davis up to be named a First-Team All-American, as he has performed at the highest level all season long. He scored in double figures in every UNC Basketball game except for two, vs UC Riverside and at Duke, and was the catalyst for the Tar Heel offense almost every single night, scoring 20 or more points in 19 total contests.
Now the chase for more accolades continues... Could Davis score one of the six National Player of the Year Awards that would qualify him to have his jersey moved to the front row of the rafters and never be worn again?
