Remember when we thought Roy Williams was pulling a April Fools prank on us!

Roy Williams is the sole reason why I don't enjoy April Fools Day anymore.

Let me explain.

Let's take you back to April 1, 2021. I remember the day vividly, as I'm sure plenty of UNC basketball fans do as well.

While at work, I receive a text, and don't bother to check right away. Then, more messages come in, and it instantly made me think, "okay, what is going on here."

The first text I received was from a colleague at Keeping It Heel, saying "Roy Williams is retiring."

My first reaction, of course, was "stop playing, I know it's April Fools Day!"

Well, it wasn't a joke. It was a reality.

Williams, who led North Carolina to five Final Fours (2005, 2008, 2009, 2016 and 2017), cutting down the nets in 2005, 2009 and 2017, wasn't kidding about stepping away from coaching. The man who put together a Hall of Fame resume on the sidelines was ready to call it a career, and later that day, he would make it official in a press conference at the Dean Smith Center.

Sure, there were rumblings at the time that Williams could decide to retire sooner rather than later. Myself, like many other Tar Heels fans, felt that time would still be a few years away, as we never expected it to happen right at that moment.

It's been three years since that day (if you can imagine), as Hubert Davis has led the UNC basketball program to a Sweet 16 appearance in 2024 and a national championship game berth in 2022 since taking over the position.

Of course, we all knew the time would come for Williams to retire would come, but it was rather surprising that it came up so abruptly.

Also, we love Coach Williams to death. However, couldn't he have waited a day to make the announcement?!
