After helping lead the UNC baseball program to the Chapel Hill Regional title, freshman third baseman Gavin Gallaher was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Regional.

The Apex, North Carolina native was more than ready for the spotlight that comes with NCAA Tournament action, as he wasted no time making a major impact for the Diamond Heels on both offense and defense.

In the Tar Heels opening game against LIU, Gallaher put together arguably his best overall performance of his young UNC baseball career, as he went 3-4 with two home runs, six runs batted in to go along with three runs scored.

His second home run was the biggest swing of the night, as it was a walk-off grand slam that helped the Diamond Heels advance to the winner's bracket.

Overall, Gallaher picked up five hits in 17 at-bats (.294 average) over the Tar Heels' four games played. Not only was he outstanding with the bat but was arguably even better with the glove, as the freshman third baseman made multiple highlight reel plays that were huge momentum boosts for the Diamond Heels.

Of course, we'll all remember his walk-off grand slam, but his overall body of work in the Chapel Hill Regional should not be forgotten. It's very possible that the Tar Heels aren't in a position to make it to the Super Regionals if it wasn't for Gallaher, as the freshman appears to have a very bright future ahead of him.

Gallaher and the UNC baseball program are now focused on this weekend's Super Regionals, as they'll host West Virginia in a best of three series that begins on Friday night at Boshamer Stadium.
