Did the right 5 ACC teams make the 2024 NCAA Tournament?
When the 2024 NCAA Tournament brackets were released, five ACC programs found themselves among the playing field.
Here's how the ACC teams seeded (along with their respective regions:
North Carolina- No. 1 Seed- West Region
Duke- No. 4 Seed- South Region
Clemson- No. 6 Seed- West Region
Virginia- No. 10 Seed (Play-In Game)- Midwest Region
NC State- No. 11 Seed- South Region
The UNC basketball and Clemson are in the same bracket, while Duke and NC State also were put together for tournament purposes. Virginia has to beat Colorado St. in a play-in game for the chance to take on Texas in the first round.
So, for a conference that many expected should get only two to three teams in, five isn't bad at all.
Except, they got the wrong five.
North Carolina, Duke and Clemson were all essentially "locks" to make the tournament field. NC State, after a tremendous ACC Tournament run, received the automatic bid, as the Wolfpack probably don't get in without winning the ACC Tournament title.
Virginia, on the other hand, has NO business making the tournament over a team like Pittsburgh or even Wake Forest.
Sure, Wake Forest didn't do itself any favors by struggling down the stretch, but remember: this was a team that was battling for the top spot in the ACC for a good amount of time.
Pittsburgh, after starting 1-5 in conference play, really locked in, as you have to give Jeff Capel and his crew credit for how they battled through adversity to find success down the stretch.
Virginia, the team who gets the right to play their way into the tournament, has no business being among the field, contrary to what Cory Alexander, Virginia alum and the program's hype man on ESPN, has to say.
This is a team that lost five out of its final 9 games! Sure, they lost to North Carolina and Duke over that span, but they also lost to NC State, Virginia Tech, and Pittsburgh, the team that should be in over them.
Add that with a weak non-conference schedule for the Cavaliers. Why is this team among the field?
People want to complain about the number of ACC teams making the NCAA Tournament field, and of course, we'd love to see more conference teams making the cut. However, if we're limited to just five, put the right five in, as Pittsburgh can honestly say they've been "robbed."
