Following the 2022 season, Dre Bly and the UNC football program agreed to mutually part ways after Bly served on the coaching staff for four years.

The former UNC football star found a new home in the NFL, as he was named the Detroit Lions cornerbacks coach for the 2023 season.

Unfortunately, Bly's time with the Lions organization was short-lived, as it was announced that he was relieved of his duties after just one season in Detroit.

After reaching the NFC Championship game, the Lions are making an effort to bolster the performance of their defense. During the 2023 season, the Lions defense ranked 19th in yards allowed, 29th in passing yards allowed and second in rushing yards allowed.

Bly is one of three coaches who were replaced on the staff, as it appears that the Lions are looking for a whole-new look heading into 2024. After falling just short of a Super Bowl berth, Dan Campbell and the Lions organization must feel the need to capitalize on the opportunity in front of them, as some changes could go a long way in helping them get over the hump.

As a player, Bly spent 1996-1998 as a member of the North Carolina secondary, earning All-American honors as a redshirt freshman with 11 interceptions. He would cement himself as one of the greatest defensive backs in program history and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Following his time at North Carolina, Bly went on to be a second round pick in the 1999 NFL Draft. He spent 12 seasons at the professional ranks, as his best two seasons of his career came in 2003 and 2004 as a Detroit Lion, his two Pro Bowl seasons of his career.

It will be interesting what is next for Bly, who now has collegiate and NFL coaching experience on his resume. We'll have to wait and see what opportunity arises next for the UNC football legend as he continues his coaching journey.
