Armando Bacot ties NCAA Tournament record in UNC basketball program's win over Wagner
March Armando is the best Armando.
Armando Bacot loves playing basketball in the month of March, as the UNC basketball program's big man has showed up when it matters most during the NCAA Tournament. During the Tar Heels' run to the national championship game in 2022, Bacot recorded a double-double in each tournament game a long the way, as he continued that trend in his team's 2024 tournament opener on Thursday afternoon.
With his 20 points and 15 rebounds, Bacot has now recorded double-doubles in seven consecutive NCAA Tournament games. The Richmond, Virginia native has now tied the longest double-double streak in tournament play, as he's joined some elite company in the process.
Bacot now joins Tim Duncan and Hakeem Olajuwon as the only players to put this type of streak together. The Tar Heels' big man will have the opportunity to become the first player ever to record eight consecutive double-doubles when the UNC basketball program takes on Michigan State on Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Not only did Bacot tie this impressive record, he also made UNC basketball history as well. He's now in sole possession of second place on the program's all-time leading scorers list, and although he's had an extra season to work with, it's still a very impressive accomplishment.
The UNC basketball program needs Bacot on top of his game to make a deep NCAA Tournament run. The first-round contest against Wagner should be very encouraging for the Tar Heels, as Bacot asserted his will against an undersized opponent. The hope is that he'll continue to do that as the tournament rolls on.
Bacot looks to end his UNC basketball career with a bang, as his final run in the NCAA Tournament is off to a very good start.
