Armando Bacot names "an attractive candidate" in the UNC basketball Head Coach search
When Roy Williams retired as the head coach of the UNC basketball program, the college basketball world focused its attention on Chapel Hill.
As the university searched for its next head coach, plenty of names were thrown around as potential candidates. Of course, the University of North Carolina has the tendency of keeping their coaching positions "within the family," as they prefer a candidate with Tar Heel connections.
While the world speculated on who would be the program's next leader, so did the players on the roster. Armando Bacot recently joined Inside Carolina's Top 40 Club show, as the now former Tar Heel believed that it was ultimately a two-man race for the gig.
"Wes Miller was an attractive candidate. It was probably a little too early for him to go from head coach of UNCG to Carolina. For us, it was either Coach Davis or Coach Miller. That's what made the most sense. It got crazy, too. People said maybe Brad Stevens. There were some crazy names thrown out there. Carolina is probably the best coaching job in college basketball. Carolina or Kansas, one of the two. Carolina keeps it in-house, so it had to be [Davis or Miller]."
Bacot called former Tar Heel (and now current Cincinnati head coach Wes Miller an "attractive candidate," as he fit the bill of keeping the job in-house. However, Bacot cited how it might've been too early for him to make the jump from UNCG (where he originally was coaching) to the UNC basketball program.
As we know, the search didn't take very long, as Davis was named the head coach of the UNC basketball program just four days after Roy Williams' retirement announcement on April 1, 2021. However, during that short span of time, the country debated the potential options to take over the reins, as Wes Miller seemed to be a legitimate candidate (at least in the eyes of the players that were still on the roster).
Who knows: maybe Miller is destined to be the head coach of the UNC basketball program in the future. He does seem to check off all the boxes.
