On this day in UNC Basketball history: Tyler Hansbrough commits to the Tar Heels

Tyler Hansbrough committed to the University of North Carolina 21 years ago.

A five-star recruit out of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Hansbrough was widely regarded as a top 10-ranked prospect in the Class of 2025. He finished as 247Sports' No. 7-ranked recruit, ultimately taking his talents to join Roy Williams and the UNC basketball program in Chapel Hill.

While it was well-known what type of player he was, no one could've predicted what he ended up accomplishing as a member of the UNC basketball program.

Earning the nickname "Psycho T," Hansbrough set plenty of records during his illustrious college career. He still holds the top spot as the ACC's all-time leading scorer, was an All-American and All-ACC first-team selection four times each, and also earned the 2008 National Player of the Year Award. He wrapped up his career by leading the 2009 squad to an NCAA Title, setting Division I records for made free throws (982) and posting impressive tournament numbers overall (20.2 points, 8.6 rebounds per game).

Oh, and Hansbrough will be the first to tell you: Duke fans never had the opportunity to experience a Blue Devils victory over the Tar Heels in Durham during Hansbrough's tenure at North Carolina.

We're sure you've heard the name "Hansbrough Indoor Stadium" before!

When programs recruit student-athletes, they hope that they live up to the hype and potential that follows them throughout their youth. In the case of Tyler Hansbrough, he even exceeded those expectations (which is hard to believe given he was a highly-touted recruit), earning his mark as one of the greatest players to ever wear the Carolina Blue uniform.

Now, his No. 50 hangs in the rafters at the Dean Smith Center, a number that will never be worn again (and rightly so). To think that this incredible journey began with his announcement to become a Tar Heel 21 years ago.

Both sides are certainly thrilled with the ultimate result.
