A few weeks ago, the thought of even being bowl eligible was something that seemed like a long shot for the UNC football program.
Now, the Tar Heels are bowl eligible for the sixth straight season, defying the odds following a brutal four-game losing streak.
Their latest victory comes against Wake Forest, giving the UNC football program three consecutive victories. This one serves as yet another dominant performance from star running back Omarion Hampton, the guy who led the way the entire night for North Carolina.
Before we get to Hampton's big night, let's go over some of the details:
After a Noah Burnette missed field goal, Wake Forest responded with a 33-yard field goal to break the scoreless tie. The Demon Deacons lead would linger into the second quarter, as the Tar Heels would respond from there.
Jacolby Criswell scored on a four-yard keeper, while Noah Burnette connected from 24-yards just before the half to extend the UNC football program's lead to seven.
Wake Forest's starting quarterback, Hank Bachmeier, got hurt on the first play of the third quarter. In came backup Michael Kern, who led the Demon Deacons down the field for a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to tie the game up.
Following the Wake Forest score, North Carolina responded with two touchdowns within 90 seconds of each other.
The first came to cap off a six-play, 75-yard drive, as Criswell connected with JJ Jones in the back of the end zone for a 15-yard score. Shortly after, Power Echols intercepted a Kern pass and took it to the house, giving the Tar Heels a 14-point edge.
Wake Forest would battle and would cut the lead to a touchdown again, but Omarion Hampton went on to score the touchdown that ended up being the game-winner, capping off his career night by helping the UNC football program become bowl eligible.
Hampton was once again incredible, finishing the night with a career-high 244 rushing yards. Overall, the junior running back finished with 260 all purpose yards, a night that Tar Heels fans will remember fondly when they look back at Hampton's career with the UNC football program.
It wasn't perfect by any means (unless you're Omarion Hampton), but it's another big win for the UNC football program. Regardless of what happened earlier in the season, you have to give credit for how this group has bounced back, as they easily could've folded following the four-game skid.
However, this group continues to fight, having now won three in a row heading into next weekend's clash at Boston College before returning home to close out the regular season against NC State the following weekend.
