Inside Carolina confirmed that Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels have ordered throwback uniforms from the 1980 season. That was a special season in Carolina football history, one where the Tar Heels posted an 11-1 record.
At the time, the program was in its third year under head coach Dick Crum. North Carolina was 6-0 in conference play, kept six opponents from scoring a touchdown, and outscored all opponents by a total of 281 to 123. They won the ACC championship and finished the season ranked No. 10 in the final AP Top 25 Poll.
Individually, the 1980 squad featured some star-studded talent. From the two-headed monster in the backfield (Amos Lawrence and Kelvin Bryant) to a fierce defensive player who is now considered the GOAT of his craft (Lawrence Taylor) it was a special season in Chapel Hill, one that Belichick and the UNC football program look to honor moving forward.
The program is hopeful that it can debut the uniforms this upcoming season. When it finally occurs, it will be a special tribute to one of the best football teams that the university has ever seen,
Now, the only question remains: when will the jerseys go on sale, and will the university find a way to have some player jerseys available from that team?!
Who wouldn't love to wear a No. 98 retro uniform around Chapel Hill?!
