When the clock struck midnight, Inside Carolina reported some major news regarding the UNC basketball program:

The program has hired their first-ever general manager.

Longtime sports agent (and more importantly, North Carolina graduate) Jim Tanner has been hired to lead the UNC men's basketball program as its general manager.

In case you're unfamiliar with Tanner's work, he has (and continues to) represent some very notable NBA and WNBA talents. Some of the current players he's represented include:

Jarrett Allen
Desmond Bane
Ja Morant
Jeremy Sochan
Cam Thomas

He has also represented some Hall of Fame talent, including Ray Allen, Tamila Catchings, Tim Duncan and Grant Hill.

Tanner also has experience representing former Carolina players, as Inside Carolina noted that he represented the likes of Marvin Williams, John Henson, Isaiah Hicks, Sean May, Brandan Wright, Tyler Hansbrough, Justin Jackson, Raymond Felton, Luke Maye, and Joel Berry.

A guy with a tremendous amount of experience in this type of field along with ties to the university (and strong knowledge of the "Carolina Way"). Seems to me like this is a tremendous hire for the program.

Hubert Davis noted a few weeks ago that the program would be hiring a general manager as they look to expand their staff moving forward. As the Tar Heels look to keep up with the current times, adding someone like Tanner to fulfill this role should majorly impact the program while helping the UNC basketball program adjust to the current state of college basketball.

With college basketball programs operating like NBA teams, this move is one that the UNC basketball program desperately had to make. Fortunately, Jim Tanner checks all the boxes for what the UNC basketball program was (and is) looking for during their search for a general manager, as now they have their guy in place to help guide the program through this adaptation process.
